JOSEPH J. KOPCZYNSKI, ChFC, CFP
Chairman, Founder

UAS Joe is founder and Chairman of Universal Advisory Services, Inc. He is nationally recognized as one of the premier advisors to corporate executives and professionals throughout the world.

Worth Magazine chose Joe as one of the “top 200 most trusted advisors in America” in both 1996, 1997 and 1998. He has been featured in Money Magazine and Financial Planning Magazine for “building the office of the 21st Century.” Joe has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Money Magazine, USA Today, Physician’s Financial News, Accounting Today, Success Magazine, Ticker Magazine, the Albuquerque Journal and Tribune, New Mexico Business Magazine, and the Business Outlook. He has also been the guest of “Politics and More”, a live radio talk show in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

An active member of the FPA (the Financial Planning Association serves over 17,000 members in the U.S. and 23 other nations), Joe has served as Chair of its Practitioner’s Advisory Council as well as serving on several task forces, including its prestigious Conference for Advanced Planning.

Joe was accepted to the Registry of Financial Planning Practitioners, with less than 1,000 admitted nationwide. He holds both the Certified Financial Planner (CFP™) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) designations.

Mr. Kopczynski sits on the boards of several organizations including the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, and sits as chair of National Advisors Trust.

DENNIS J. MALOUF, MFP
President, Chief Executive Officer

UASDennis is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Universal Advisory Services. He began his career in 1983 and spent 16 years with PaineWebber and Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. It was there that Dennis specialized in ERISA compliance, investment policy, asset allocation and quarterly monitoring of investments. For the thirteen years that Dennis was with Morgan Stanley Dean Witter he was selected to be the Investment Consulting Service Coordinator (ICS) for New Mexico.

His duties as ICS coordinator were to interface directly with the active money managers to better assist the account executives in the selection of money managers that best fit the client's objectives. At PaineWebber, Dennis was in charge of Financial Consultant training in Investment strategies as well as business development and ethics.

Dennis has a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Northern Colorado and did an extended study in Investment Management and Analysis from the New York Institute of Finance.

Dennis also has a heavy concentration of cash management experience. He has a designation as Master Financial Professional Management (MFP). He is a member in good standing with the American Academy of Financial Management and the Treasury Management Association (TMA).

Dennis is very active in the community and has been a high school wrestling coach for the past 15 years. Dennis has a strong commitment to under-privileged kids and was a board member of Bright Horizons, an organization that focuses on domestic violence and child abuse. He is currently on the board of Called Christians that place missionaries in countries around the globe.

KIRK R. HUDSON, MBA, CFA
Managing Partner, Chief Financial Officer

UASKirk joined UAS in 1999 as Chief Financial Officer and Chairman of the Investment Committee. His responsibilities at UAS include directing investment policy, overseeing client portfolios, and managing the company’s finances. Kirk has substantial experience in corporate finance across several industries and in various financial and operational capacities.

Kirk earned his Master’s Degree in Finance from the MBA program at the University of Chicago in 1991 and his Bachelors Degree in Economics form Wheaton College in 1985. Additionally, Kirk was awarded the prestigious Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®) designation, administered by the CFA Institute® (formerly AIMR®). The CFA charter is the only globally recognized credential for investment analysis and management.

Following his graduation from Wheaton, he began his career as a financial analyst for a public company, working primarily with the investment community and the firm’s investors.

Subsequently he provided his expertise at oil services company, Conoco Inc. His responsibilities involved investment analysis, development of the company’s short and long-term business plans, research on the application of the latest financial theories to real world issues, and other special projects.

In 1994, Kirk directed the planning area for Horizon Healthcare. In this position, he managed the planning process for hundreds of entities across half a dozen business lines. His responsibilities grew to include commercial and investment banking relationships, and he was involved in several mergers and acquisitions.

After the sale of Horizon, Kirk became the regional CFO for Group 1 Automotive, a publicly traded company engaged in the consolidation of the retail automotive industry. His responsibilities included oversight of all financial and accounting activities for this $200 million revenue division.

Additionally, Kirk was active in the private foundation planning for his previous employers and brings that experience to UAS for our Family Office and Foundation Office Clients.

MATT KELLER, CFP
Chief Operating Officer

UASMatt serves as Chief Operating Officer and Client Service Director at UAS, overseeing the coordination and delegation of our Family Office clients’ advisor teams. Matt joined UAS in 2002, after working eight years in the management consulting and information technology industry.

His career began at Accenture, serving in roles of ever-increasing responsibility and visibility, spanning the financial services, healthcare, telecommunications, defense, and airline transportation industries.

As an executive with Accenture, Matt led and successfully implemented mission-critical software development projects for PacifiCare, a multi-billion dollar health maintenance organization (HMO). He reduced costs and improved revenue capture through streamlined operations and standardized billing processes at Qwest, a global firm in voice, data, and internet communications.

Matt attended the University of Notre Dame on a Navy ROTC scholarship and graduated with a degree in Economics and Computer Applications.

PETER LEHRMAN, CFA, CFP
Chief Investment Officer

UASPeter joined Universal Advisory Services in 2004 after seven years with the investment management firm, John Moore & Associates. Peter brings to UAS ten years of experience and special knowledge of trust asset management starting at Norwest Investment Management and Trust from 1995 to 1997. He currently manages over 60 individual trust relationships. In managing trusts, Peter consults and assists individuals, families, legal professionals and accountants, designing implementing and monitor investment portfolios that will best serve and support the lifelong needs of his clients. Peter has also spent the last five years developing and managing successful income-oriented portfolios comprised of non-traditional, income-oriented investments to compliment traditional fixed-income portfolios.

Peter is a 1985 graduate of the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance. He continued to enhance his education by earning the Certified Financial Planner (CFP™) designation followed by the prestigious Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA ®) designation in 1993 and 1994. The CFA charter is the only globally recognized credential for investment analysis and management. Peter applies these credentails and his experience to not only manage portfolios but to improve clients’ preparation and understanding of planning for life goals.

Peter actively volunteers his time in the community as the Investment Chairman on the Foundation Board of All Faith’s Receiving Home. He was also a founding board member of the New Mexico Society of Financial Analysts. Peter was recently married to Kathleen Kennedy.

 

MONICA PINEDA

Operations Manager

monica.gif Monica serves as UAS’ Operations Manager and provides the interface between clients and custodians.  Her education, extensive experience and relevant investment licensing enable her to deliver superior service to our clients. 

Prior to joining Universal Advisory Services in 2007, Monica worked for Raymond James Financial Services as an Administrative Assistant.  In this role she assisted clients in various brokerage related issues: account opening, transferring of assets and placing trades. While serving as Associate Vice President at The Private Bank at Bank of America, she gained experience in trust services, loan processing and personal banking.  During her three years at Morgan Stanley, she earned her Series 7 (NASD General Securities Registered Representative), Series 66 (Uniform Combined State Law), as well as life and health insurance licenses. 

Monica received her Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of New Mexico’s Anderson School of Management with an emphasis in Finance.

AUSTIN MCDANIEL, MBA, CFP™

Investment Operations Analyst

UASAustin coordinates and implements the client investment portfolio screening and reviews. In conjunction with the Investment Committee's strategic analysis of portfolios, he and the UAS Portfolio Managers ensure that each client's portfolio is aligned with their respective goals. Austin is also utilized for his business related analytical skills and experience to provide private and public company due diligence and consulting.

Austin's professional background includes work at Thornburg Investment Management as a Research Communications Analyst where he analyzed and tracked performance of fixed and equity peer groups for both mutual funds and separate-account money managers. Previous to that he worked with an accounting firm in the area of business valuation analysis.

Austin graduated cum laude with a degree in finance and a minor in economics from  the University of New Mexico and earned an MBA from the Anderson Schools of Business Management (UNM) and graduated cum laude with a Masters degree in Accounting.  Additionally, Austin is a Certified Financial Planner™ professional.

MATT CRUTCHMER
Financial Analyst

UAS As Financial Analyst, Matt performs portfolio analysis functions for UAS client portfolios. Additionally, he provides due diligence, research and monitoring of non-UAS investment managers.

Matt graduated cum laude from Oklahoma Baptist University with a Bachelor's of Business Administration focused on International Business. He also attended Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina for a portion of his undergraduate work.

His experience includes work at the law firm of McKinney, Stringer, & Webster, one of Oklahoma City's largest firms, at Pueblo Bank & Trust in Boulder, Colorado and an intensive, business-wide internship here at UAS.

PAULA CALHOUN
Human Resources Administrator & Client Bookkeeping

UASPaula oversees our Client Bookkeeping Services and manages all of the Human Resources Administration for UAS. With over 20 years of accounting experience, she manages the corporate bookkeeping and personal accounting needs of our clients.

Paula's previous work experience includes full service bookkeeping with expertise in payroll, payroll tax filing, and year-end payroll reporting for multiple states. Additionally, she has completed management courses in Human Resource Administration and keeps herself and her staff current on changes in employment law through ongoing research, periodicals, seminars and educational courses. Her education and experience give the her the ability to assist in the consulting on company benefit packages including 401(k) plans, Section 125 Cafeteria plans with FLEX spending accounts for employers, as well as health insurance benefits.

Paula's background and depth of knowledge provides our clients with a valuable resource for both their bookkeeping and human resource administration needs.

KATHRYN JOHNSON
Client Administration Services and Concierge

UASKathy is instrumental in client administration and concierge services for UAS. She is in charge of our clients' special events and for UAS events. Additionally, she coordinates client requests with the appropriate UAS staff and our concierge services. She is truly a professional in overseeing the needs of our clientele.

Kathy's background includes professional experience in event planning for charitable foundation functions, community service work, and has a management background, where she was the personal contact for all music and entertainment events.

Kathy's dedication to client needs along with her great organizational and management skills give UAS a unique level of client service.

Of Counsel:

JIM BURTON, CPA, CFOC

Jim is a consultant to UAS Family Office clients where his vast merger and acquisition experience and knowledge of corporate taxation and business consulting is invaluable.

Jim Burton began his career with KPMG Peat Marwick where he advanced to partner. After 17 years, Jim moved to the private sector as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper Bottling Company. Jim's specific accomplishments while at Coca-Cola, among others, have included:

Negotiating and structuring the sale of the company to a public company.

Obtaining industrial revenue bonds appropriation for the company's relocation.

Significantly reducing the company's working capital investment through implementation of improved cash management practices.

Currently, Jim works directly with our Family Office clients in his areas of specialization.

GERALD BISCHOFF, ESQ.

Gerry Bischoff specializes in law pertaining to estate planning, probate, corporate taxation and qualified plans. He assists in the plan design of many of the Family Office clients. He is a director and shareholder in the law firm of Dubois, Caffrey, Cooksey & Bischoff, P.A., in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

He has been practicing law for over fifteen years. He received his BS in Business Administration from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, his JD from Gonzaga University School of Law, and his Master of Law in Taxation from the University of Denver School of Law.

Admitted to practice before all the courts in the state of New Mexico, Gerry is also admitted to the United States Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States Tax Court, and the United States Claims Court.

GLENN THOMAS
Director of Privacy Management, Security & Investigation

Glenn is the Director of Private Security and Investigation for UAS, where he coordinates all aspects of maintaining the privacy of the lives and properties of our family office clients. From household-staff background checks to vacation home security monitoring to personal security coordination, the piece of mind gained through Glenn's vast experience allows our clients to more fully enjoy their affluence and their lives.

Additionally, Glenn is managing partner of Universal Investigation Services (UIS), an affiliate of UAS and an international investigation agency, who's services are available to our non-family office clients, as well. UIS specializes in corporate fraud, surveilance, background checks, polygraph exams, and most any investigative service.

Glenn Thomas is a retired (23 years of service) commander of the New Mexico State Police Criminal Investigations Section. As commander he was responsible for managing over 1200 investigative cases a year and supervised 65 commissioned detectives. Glenn was routinely brought in as a consultant on the most difficult and high profile cases in the state's history. His gift of seeing beyond the evidence and masterful interviewing techniques has earned him a reputation beyond reproach in the law enforcement community. Glenn now brings this expertise to the private sector along with a hand-selected group of the best investigators.

Glenn is a graduate of Northwestern University's Staff and Command School and has thousands of hours of training in law enforcement with an emphasis on investigations. He was an adjunct professor as the San Juan College Business and Industry Center where he taught the Zenger/Miller method of leadership to the private sector.

Mr. Thomas has a long history of community involvement and has served on numerous boards and committees aimed at improving public safety and quality of life.
